OMJ Foundation commits to supporting transport, safety and livelihoods of commercial riders in Akuapem South

On September 26, 2026, the OMJ Foundation, led by its CEO Osei Mensah Joseph, provided free fuel to over 600 commercial motorcycle riders in the Akuapem South Municipality. The one-day initiative, known as "OMJ Free Fuel for Okada Riders – Akuapem South," took place at the TotalEnergies Filling Station in Aburi. Each rider was given enough fuel to cover a full day of work, demonstrating the foundation's commitment to supporting commercial motorcycle riders in the municipality.

Mr. Mensah Joseph explained that the initiative was inspired by the vital role Okada riders play in the municipality's transportation system and local economy. Approximately 70% of commuters in Akuapem South rely on Okada services daily, making their work crucial for the area's movement. He emphasized the need for proper licensing and vehicle registration, pointing out that 85% of the riders do not have riding licenses, while 90% have not registered their motorcycles.

The foundation plans to address these issues by providing reflective riding gear to enhance rider safety, particularly during nighttime and foggy conditions.

The program involved various stakeholders, including officials from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), National Road Safety Commission, Star Assurance, Ghana Police Service, and the Commercial Riders Union of Ghana (CRUG). These organizations provided information on road safety, licensing, motorcycle registration, insurance, health insurance, fire safety, and responsible riding practices. NHIS officials even registered new members and renewed expired memberships free of charge for the riders.

The OMJ Foundation's gesture, aligned with the theme "Giving Back, Giving Hope, Inspiring Generations," aims to support the commercial motorcycle riders and inspire positive change in the community. The initiative was observed on the 5th of September, World International Day of Charity.
