NTSA intensifies training for PSV operators to curb road crashes

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) is ramping up training for public transport operators in a bid to curb road crashes and enhance overall safety across Kenya. The initiative, part of the Public Transport Professionalisation and Capacity Building Programme, is currently in session in Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, and Trans Nzoia counties, following a similar initiative in Garissa, Voi, and Mombasa.

The training, slated to run from September 28 to October 1, brings together public service vehicle (PSV) drivers, fleet managers, and Sacco directors to bolster professionalism, compliance, and safety standards in the sector. NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa emphasized the Authority's commitment to restoring order on the roads, stating that the welfare of citizens is of utmost importance.

Over 200 participants from 27 Saccos are attending the program in Nakuru, which encompasses various aspects of PSV operations. The curriculum includes professional conduct, passenger care and wellness, defensive driving, vehicle safety, compliance with traffic regulations, digital systems, emergency response, fleet operations, financial and governance practices, customer experience, and technology.

The program also aims to address behavioral, vehicular, and operational factors that contribute to road accidents. By the end of the training, participants are expected to develop 90-day improvement plans. Moreover, the program intends to enhance compliance with licensing, roadworthiness, insurance, and passenger safety requirements, as well as provide industry insights for the review of the PSV (Operations) Regulations, 2014.
