Nothing to seal here: NZ police help stranded pup home

Wellington police assisted a seal that was stuck on a busy road, guiding the confused juvenile back into the water, they reported on Monday. Locals found the partially wet marine mammal struggling to cross Hutt Road in Wellington on Sunday afternoon, according to police. The creature then attempted to return to the water, prompting immediate action from police and Department of Conservation officials to ensure its safe passage.

The young seal seemed thankful for the help, according to the police statement. Senior Sergeant Miriam Bentley from Wellington Police said their team managed to lift the seal and drive it to a secure location where it was released back into the water. The event showcased collaborative problem-solving that prevented further complications for the young seal and road users.

Constable Taylor, who helped escort the pup, noted that joining the police just 15 months ago taught him to be prepared for anything, as evidenced by this incident. New Zealand's seas are home to various seal species, some of which occasionally venture onto land. The Department of Conservation noted a 200 percent increase in land sightings around Wellington over the weekend, local media reported, describing it as "seal silly season".

Police advised the public to contact them about any runaway seals instead of trying to intervene themselves.
