No Plan B, Just NEET: How an auto-driver’s son secured an MBBS seat at KGMU

Prabhat Kumar Yadav, a 19-year-old from Devkipur village in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district, secured an MBBS seat at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow after clearing the NEET UG 2026 with an All India Rank (AIR) 3864. His journey to medical college was not a battle fought alone; his father, Mahendra Kumar Yadav, played a crucial role by providing financial support for his son's education.

Mahendra Kumar had been driving an auto-rickshaw in Mumbai for 20 years to support his family, often video-calling Prabhat at night despite his fatigue. Despite his father's struggles, Prabhat remained motivated, stating, "At least I don’t have to find passengers all day; at least I don’t have to cook for myself after a whole day of toil; the only thing I have to do is study."

Initially aspiring to become an IAS officer, Prabhat's interests shifted to medicine in Class 9. After Class 10, he scored 89.44% and chose medicine, following a similar path to his friends in Kota. However, paying for coaching fees was challenging. Prabhat secured a 10-20 percent fee concession from his coaching institute, with the remaining amount funded by his father and a family member.

His hard work paid off when he scored 504 marks in NEET UG 2025 and secured AIR 3864 in NEET UG 2026. Upon hearing the NEET result, Prabhat's father expressed deep relief, while the village celebrated his achievement. Looking ahead, Prabhat plans to bring his father back to his hometown and support other financially constrained students like himself.
