NiMet forecasts 3-day thunderstorms, moderate rainfall nationwide

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted three days of thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across Nigeria, beginning Monday and lasting through Wednesday. Ahead of these storms, strong winds are expected to impact certain areas. NiMet shared this three-day weather outlook on Sunday evening, detailing conditions for the northern, North-Central, and southern regions of the country.

NiMet projected patches of clouds to cover the northern region on Monday morning, transitioning to thunderstorms and moderate rainfall throughout the day. Similarly, scattered moderate rainfall is expected to occur across most parts of the southern region later on Monday. On Tuesday, NiMet anticipates cloudy conditions across northern Nigeria, with morning thunderstorms and light rainfall affecting parts of Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Taraba, and Adamawa states.

On Wednesday, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are predicted to begin in the morning over Taraba, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe regions, then spreading across the rest of the northern part of the country later in the day.

Airline operators have been advised to obtain detailed airport-specific weather reports and flight documentation from NiMet for efficient operational planning. NiMet has issued several weather advisories in 2026 due to the increasing risks posed by thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and other weather conditions that pose threats to residents, motorists, and aviation operations nationwide.

Continuous rainfall could lead to flooding in coastal and low-lying communities, particularly in Lagos and other states along Nigeria's southern coastline.
