‘Nigerians are suffering’ – Ogun group backs return of fuel subsidy

The Yayi Ni Wura Alliance Movement, a political support group in Ogun State, has called on President Bola Tinubu to reinstate the fuel subsidy in a bid to alleviate the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians. In a statement released in Abeokuta, the group disclosed that it had severed ties with the PDP’s Ogun Central senatorial candidate, Iyabo Obasanjo, over unresolved party issues and had allied itself with the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Speaking to DAILY POST, Comrade Wasiu Adejumo, the Director of Media and Publicity of the group, revealed that despite the removal of fuel subsidy boosting infrastructure and increasing allocations to states, the common man has yet to feel the direct benefits. He emphasized that Nigerians' desire for the return of the subsidy is understandable, given the surge in transport fares, house rent, and the overall cost of living.

Adejumo urged the President to contemplate the restoration of the full subsidy, or alternatively, introduce a partial subsidy to lower the fuel pump price. He noted that while the country is reaping the benefits of subsidy removal through rail projects, ICT innovations, and increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) allocated to governors, these advantages are not effectively reaching the grassroots level.

He argued that such a subsidy would provide immediate relief to the masses, who are primarily judged by the price of fuel.

The group also reacted to President Tinubu's appeal for citizens to hold their leaders accountable, highlighting that not every Nigerian has access to the media. Despite the ongoing difficulties, Adejumo expressed satisfaction with the administration and pledged the group's commitment to mobilizing 100,000 votes for Tinubu’s re-election and for Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, commonly known as Yayi, to win the gubernatorial election in Ogun State in 2027.
