Mumbai: BEST Opposes Private Power Distribution Proposal In Dharavi, Cites Network And Consumer Concerns

Mumbai, September 28, 2026 - The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) has objected to a private company’s plan to distribute electricity in Dharavi. This is despite BEST being responsible for power supply in the area at present. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has been notified of BEST’s concerns over this proposal.

BEST is worried about its existing distribution network, customer base and the broader implications of allowing another utility to operate in Dharavi. The dense population of Mumbai’s Dharavi could see a renewed discussion on competition in the city’s electricity distribution sector. BEST currently serves a large number of consumers in Dharavi and any private entrant could impact the undertaking’s customers and revenue.
