Modders bring Nvidia’s DLSS 5 Neural Rendering to AMD Radeon GPUs

An unofficial project is bringing Nvidia’s DLSS 5 to AMD Radeon GPUs, with early testing showing performance climbing from around 30 FPS to 50 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 after rapid optimization.

Modders bring Nvidia’s DLSS 5 Neural Rendering to AMD Radeon GPUs

Nvidia recently introduced DLSS 5, a Neural Rendering technology, to RTX 50-series GPU owners. Although early evaluations indicate enhancements in image quality and rendering, the technology is highly resource-intensive, leading to substantial frame rate decreases. Undeterred, modders have been working to adapt DLSS 5 for AMD Radeon GPUs.

A GitHub project, DLSS-NR-on-AMD, is already showing promising improvements. This project requires a full reimplementation of the neural network runtime for AMD GPUs. Presently, the project functions with DirectX 12 games utilizing FSR, including Cyberpunk 2077 and GTA V Enhanced. According to YouTube channel Ancient Gameplays, Cyberpunk 2077 runs at over 80 FPS on a Radeon RX 9070 XT without DLSS 5 Neural Rendering.

However, enabling the unofficial implementation results in a performance drop of about 11-12 FPS. This highlights the extensive optimization still required for the technology to be practical on AMD hardware. Development has been swift, with an Alpha 0.3.3 version delivering a claimed 23% performance improvement. Following this, Alpha 0.4.0 introduced further enhancements, reportedly adding 42% more improvement over version 0.3.3.

The project has also become more user-friendly thanks to the AMDNR launcher, which can automate much of the setup process. The launcher supports various runtimes and offers additional options through the OptiScaler interface. After testing Alpha 0.4.0 in Cyberpunk 2077 at 3440 x 1440 resolution, Ancient Gameplays observed the Radeon GPU reaching around 50 FPS, a significant improvement over the roughly 30 FPS achieved with the earlier build.

Nonetheless, the performance is still far below the game's performance without Neural Rendering enabled. As the project remains in alpha, performance and compatibility can vary significantly depending on the game and GPU. Nonetheless, the developer has assured Ancient Gameplays that they are working on another major update, promising a substantial performance boost on Radeon GPUs.
