MND Local Guadalajara: Cirque du Soleil, Day of the Dead festivities and Ukrainian ballet coming to town, but mind the sinkholes

Guadalajara is set to host a diverse array of cultural events this month, but drivers should exercise caution due to numerous sinkholes caused by heavy rain throughout the summer. First, the renowned circus troupe Cirque du Soleil will perform its 20th show, "Echo," at the Gran Carpa Soleil in Plaza Patria from October 8 to 25. The production follows the story of a young woman and her dog as they explore an enigmatic world, with a massive, disassembled 23-foot cube set that changes throughout the performance.

The show is directed by Mukhtar Omar Sharif Mukhtar and includes acrobatics, visual effects, and live music. Meanwhile, the city's Leyenda de la Noche theme park will host a Day of the Dead festival, offering visitors a spooky atmosphere to celebrate the Mexican holiday. Additionally, the Ukrainian ballet company will present their rendition of "Swan Lake" in Guadalajara, providing a classical alternative for theater enthusiasts.

However, the city's transportation network faces significant challenges due to over 3,000 sinkholes created by the recent storms. SIAPA, the public water authority, has repaired approximately half of these hazards, but many remain. Traffic accidents, lengthy delays, and road closures have resulted from these incidents, particularly affecting major commuting routes.

Key affected areas include Malecón Avenue, Enrique Díaz de León Avenue, and Manuel Ávila Camacho Avenue, where extensive repairs are underway, and some roads remain closed until October 2.
