Microsoft goes quiet after church groups ask for 1% of data center costs

Microsoft has made commitments to local communities regarding its data center investments. The company has pledged to be a "good neighbor" by paying local property taxes and investing in community services. Microsoft has sent liaisons to these communities to learn about their needs. However, when pressed on the specifics of their investments beyond the "good neighbor" campaign, Microsoft representatives have seemed unprepared.

The company has admitted that simply matching employees' charitable donations ($229 million to 29,000 nonprofits in 2024) is insufficient. Nevertheless, Microsoft has remained vague about more substantial local investments, which appear small compared to the estimated hundreds of millions in tax breaks that data centers receive in 38 states for decades.
