Maybank To Enhance Its MAE App’s Built-In Malware Shielding Feature

Maybank is set to enhance the Malware Shielding security feature within its MAE banking app, aiming to provide improved protection against malware and potential security threats. This upgrade is expected to be released gradually starting September 26th with the new version of the app, 0.9.51. However, as of now, this update has not been made available on the Android and iOS app stores.

Users currently have the version 0.9.50 on their devices, and will want to ensure they install the forthcoming update as soon as it becomes accessible.

The upgraded Malware Shielding feature is reported to be able to identify additional security risks on users' devices. Upon detection of a risk, the app will inform the user and suggest necessary steps to secure the device before they can proceed with using MAE. Once the updated application is installed, users will also be required to read and accept the Malware Shielding Terms & Conditions, confirming that the feature will automatically detect and inform them of any potential malware or unsafe security settings each time they launch the MAE app.

Maybank has emphasized that the Malware Shielding feature does not have the ability to access, gather, process, or store any personal information from applications installed on the user's device. The bank has stated that banking information and personal data remain secure and confidential. MAE Malware Shielding was initially introduced in 2024 as a preventive security measure that operates whenever users open the MAE app.

This feature can identify risky or malicious applications, unsafe device settings like Developer Mode or rooted and jailbroken operating systems, screen sharing and recording, unsafe connections and services, as well as tampered versions of the MAE app. Depending on the risk severity, the Malware Shielding feature may notify users, provide guidance on how to resolve the issue, or limit access to MAE until the risk is resolved.

The bank reiterates these measures are in place to minimize the risk of unauthorized access and fraudulent transactions.

Furthermore, the bank advises users to keep both the MAE app and their device's operating system updated with the most recent versions as part of their overall security precautions.
