Mahama announces 1,200MW state-owned gas power plant deal by end of 2026

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to sign an agreement for a 1,200-megawatt state-owned gas-fired thermal power plant by the end of 2026. This project is aimed at significantly boosting Ghana's thermal power generation capacity and aligning the country's energy mix with global trends. The President made this announcement during a town hall meeting in New York with the Ghanaian community, emphasizing the need to maintain reliable power supply while adapting to changes in the global energy landscape.

He noted that gas-fired generation remains crucial for Ghana's electricity needs, especially as the country aims to provide a stable power supply while responding to shifts in the global energy market. President Mahama also highlighted the government's efforts to resolve financial issues within the energy sector, including clearing outstanding debts to independent power producers (IPPs).

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has restructured its revenue collection processes to ensure more effective payments to power producers, thereby enhancing the financial stability of the electricity supply chain. The proposed 1,200MW facility would significantly contribute to Ghana's state-owned power generation capacity.
