Linux Week 2: Learning, Practicing & Figuring Things Out

Last week, the author shared their progress from the Linux journey with Akwannya Hub’s Skill Pods. They had just finished Chapters 1–3 and felt more comfortable with the terminal. This week, they advanced to Chapters 4–6 and found open source concepts like GPL, copyleft, FOSS, FSF, OSI, and Creative Commons to be more comprehensible.

Initially, the new terminology was overwhelming, but breaking them down gradually made it easier. The author then practiced more command-line commands, such as echo, history, type, which, man, and others.

Chapter 6 taught a crucial lesson: they didn’t need to know everything. Instead, they needed to learn how to find help. They discovered various tools and commands that aided in their learning process:

- man ls to read a command’s manual

- whatis for a quick description

- man -k / and apropos to search for help

- whereis to find commands and documentation

- locate to search for files and directories

- info for detailed documentation

- --help for quick assistance in the terminal

The author also did hands-on labs and typed the commands themselves, rather than just reading about them. They added screenshots from their practice to demonstrate the commands’ functionality. The biggest challenge remained the sheer volume of new terms, but the author learned to take their time, read, practice, seek clarification from documentation, and eventually, understanding would come.

In conclusion, the author’s biggest takeaway from these three chapters is that Linux isn’t about memorizing every command but understanding the concepts and knowing how to find one’s way when unsure. The key takeaway from the article is that this Linux Essentials learning experience is about understanding the fundamentals and knowing how to navigate when encountering unfamiliar challenges.
