Lee Chong Wei mourns Dr Hasmah: ‘To us, she was a warrior’

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 — In a somber statement following the death of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali at the age of 100, former badminton world champion Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei remembered her as a "warrior" and a source of unwavering support for the national squad. Lee expressed being "frozen" upon receiving the news, describing his heart as "truly sad and heavy."

He recalled a conversation with Dr Hasmah in the lead-up to the Malaysia Open earlier this year, when she revealed her wish to attend the stadium to cheer on the players. Lee noted that Dr Hasmah's love for badminton never waned, and he was unaware it would be their final conversation. To the national badminton squad, she was not just a former Prime Minister's wife, but a warrior and the most respected person among them.

Throughout Lee's 19-year career, Dr Hasmah remained a constant presence, whether they won or lost. She treated the players like her own children, mediating disagreements with "gentleness and wisdom." Lee credited her affection for uniting the team and serving as the strongest bulwark for Malaysian badminton. Dr Hasmah herself played badminton until she turned 75, inspiring the entire team with her passion for the sport.

In his tribute, Lee expressed that her smile and love would forever reside on the court and in the hearts of all Malaysians. Lee concluded his statement with a heartfelt "Rest in peace, Tun. We will always miss you." Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that Dr Hasmah would receive a state funeral.
