Kurt Warner's Theory on Why Buccaneers Are Struggling This Season

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently 0-3 in the season, and Kurt Warner, the former star quarterback, has an opinion on why they are having difficulties. The Buccaneers' most recent loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3 was a game they lost by a margin of one possession. The team's offensive performance has been subpar, as they scored a season-low of 16 points and averaged only 3.8 yards per play.

During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Warner suggested that the absence of wide receiver Mike Evans is a significant factor in the Buccaneers' decline. Evans, widely regarded as the greatest receiver in franchise history, departed for the San Francisco 49ers during the offseason. Warner explained, "I think that’s hurt them and Baker — to not have one guy to be able to go, ‘Hey, this is the guy, my safety net, my safety blanket, that I can come back here and throw to this guy,’" Evans' departure has left a void in the Buccaneers' offense, making it challenging for them to generate big plays without his presence.

The team's performance this season has regressed compared to last year, with their offense now averaging 20.6 points per game and 279.3 total yards per game, both declines from the 22.4 points and 320.4 total yards per game they averaged in the previous season. The Buccaneers' struggles are particularly evident in their inability to create significant plays without Evans, who served as a reliable target for starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Unfortunately, Mayfield suffered a thumb injury in the Week 3 loss to the Vikings, which could sideline him for an extended period, further complicating the Buccaneers' chances of securing their first win of the season. As the team prepares to face the Green Bay Packers in Week 4, they may be entering the season with a 0-4 record, a challenging position among only seven instances in NFL history where a team started with a 0-3 record and still managed to reach the playoffs.
