Kubwa explosion: Police reveal cause, launch manhunt for driver

On September 27, 2026, a gas plant fire at Liberty Junction, Byazhin, Kubwa in Abuja erupted, according to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command. The incident unfolded around 6:30am when a resident alerted authorities to the blaze via distress call. FCT Police Division officers swiftly arrived on the scene, discovering the fire had engulfed adjacent shops and structures.

The Federal Fire Service responded, aiding in extinguishing the flames. Preliminary investigations pointed to the driver of an unregistered Toyota 4Runner Jeep as the probable cause; he was allegedly driving against traffic, lost control, and collided with the gas plant. The driver and his passengers fled the scene immediately after the collision.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the driver's identity and announced the launch of a manhunt to apprehend him. The Police emphasized that the fire was currently contained and no casualties had been reported. However, the extent of property damage was yet to be quantified.
