Kinew adds portfolio to focus on first responders

Premier Wab Kinew reshuffled his cabinet on Monday, establishing a new portfolio dedicated to overseeing first responders in the province. The portfolio will be led by David Pankratz, MLA for Waverley, who was appointed as minister responsible for first responder initiatives. Carla Compton, MLA for Portage la Prairie, was appointed minister responsible for accessibility, replacing Nahanni Fontaine. Kinew emphasized that the government is now prioritizing the well-being of those who serve and protect the province.

Pankratz, a former firefighter, will be tasked with ensuring adequate staffing levels for first responders and police across Manitoba, while also providing necessary support services such as counseling. Kinew expressed his goal of having the best presumptive workers compensation coverage for first responders in the country.

Meanwhile, Shannon Corbett, MLA for St. Boniface, was named special envoy for military affairs, taking over the role previously held by Pankratz. Compton, a registered nurse, has already been assigned to review the final report of the Integrated Adult Services Pilot Project, which recommended overhauling Manitoba’s disability services program with 13 key recommendations. Robert Loiselle, MLA for St. Boniface, will continue to serve as deputy house leader.
