Jangan serah isu disiplin kepada sekolah semata-mata, ibu bapa diberitahu

Ibu bapa and guardians should not relinquish responsibility for handling discipline and bullying issues to teachers and schools alone, according to the President of National Parents and Teachers Association (PIBGN), Mohamad Ali Hasan. Hasan stated that active involvement from parents is crucial in addressing the death of a 14-year-old student allegedly beaten by a senior student for violating school rules.

He emphasized that parental attention should not solely focus on academic achievements, but also include aspects of discipline, safety, and character development. Hasan urged parents to participate more actively in PIBG, including attending meetings and committing to school and alumni activities. He also suggested that PIBG and alumni can promote safety and discipline programs by inviting police, prison officials, and other relevant parties to share their views and experiences.

The initial investigation found that a Form 4 student was detained due to an alleged verbal altercation and provocation with the victim, 14-year-old Idlan Fareeq Shahril, who was found unconscious at a sports school hostel and later declared dead at Tuanku Ampuan Najihah Hospital. The police are treating the incident as a murder.

Hasan stressed that handling bullying requires cooperation from parents, teachers, educators, alumni, and the local and national community, in addition to national support. He also mentioned that Education Ministry (KPM) proposals for bullying prevention measures must be followed up with meaningful actions and not limited to basic levels or left to the school alone.

Hasan stressed that comprehensive education encompasses physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and social aspects, as well as the holistic development of individuals and character, and must be sustained throughout life. He emphasized that this approach is important in the short and long term to ensure that the issue of bullying is addressed comprehensively with the involvement of all parties.
