Jalani Sidek remembers Siti Hasmah as a mother to badminton players

Former Malaysian badminton player Jalani Sidek recalled the late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali as a devoted mother figure to the sport's players during the 1980s and 1990s when the country's badminton scene struggled with financial constraints. According to Jalani, Siti Hasmah, who served as the patron of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), went beyond merely showing interest in the athletes' performances on court; she became a source of support and care for their well-being.

She was always there to listen to players' problems and provide assistance, Jalani said when asked. Whether the players won or lost, Siti Hasmah always placed priority on their welfare and lives as athletes. Jalani still remembered her role in securing Proton Saga cars for the players as recognition of their achievements. At that time, badminton was far from the financially prosperous sport it is today; Proton Sagas were a token of gratitude from the patron.

Jalani emphasized that Siti Hasmah's support gave the players extra motivation whenever they competed. One of his most cherished memories was the 1992 Thomas Cup victory, which ended Malaysia's 25-year drought, and their bronze medal achievement at the Barcelona Olympics. The players regarded Tun Hasmah as their mother, feeling that their accomplishments were blessed by the mother of Malaysian badminton.

Jalani, now 64, expressed deep sadness over her passing, describing it as a great loss to him and the generation of players who had received her care and support.
