Israel's relations with Europe in tailspin over West Bank sanctions

Israel's relations with Europe are rapidly deteriorating due to the Netherlands' ban on importing goods from illegal settlements, according to Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. The Dutch government has given Israeli diplomats serving in the West Bank 7 days to hand over their credentials, limiting their ability to carry out diplomatic work with Palestinians.

This ban, implemented last week, does not affect goods purchased within Israel's sovereign borders. The Netherlands' policy, which targets the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights, has been met with strong criticism from Israel. Israeli news outlets reported that Dutch customs officers searched passengers arriving in Amsterdam on Israeli airline El Al for settlement goods.

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid described the situation as a "diplomatic failure unlike anything that has ever happened before," comparing it to the Netherlands' role as the most pro-Nazi western European country during WWII. The US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, called the Dutch decision "insane," warning that even purchasing a "nativity set from Bethlehem" could lead to imprisonment.

Former Israeli ambassador to the US, Michael Oren, accused the Netherlands of returning to its "anti-Semitic roots." The Dutch ban aligns with a growing wave of punitive measures against Israel, including the closure of the British Consulate in Jerusalem and similar announcements from 11 other western countries. The escalating tensions threaten the future of the two-state solution and raise questions about the legitimacy of Israel's actions in occupied territories.
