German hiker and partner rescued after night stranded in Cape Town coastline

A German traveler and his companion were rescued after being stranded overnight near a shipwreck on the Cape Town coastline, following an ankle injury and challenging trail conditions. The pair, hiking from Llandudno to Hout Bay, encountered overgrown and treacherous sections of the path that did not accurately reflect on an online navigation app.

After the German traveler suffered an ankle injury, the pair decided to turn back, but found a particularly difficult portion of the trail and called for help late on Sunday afternoon. Rescuers, including Western Cape Government Health and Wellness EMS paramedics, SANParks Table Mountain National Park SEAM team, and rangers, were deployed to the scene.

Due to strong winds and fading daylight, rescuers opted to remain with the hikers overnight rather than attempting a descent in hazardous conditions. Specialist WSAR trail runners assisted by carrying essential equipment to the stranded hikers. A planned helicopter extraction was abandoned when winds became unsafe, so rescuers deployed additional WSAR team members for a technical descent.

The injured hiker was carefully lowered down from a height of about 60 meters onto the coastline using granite slabs, where NSRI teams awaited with rescue boats. Using a small inflatable canoe, NSRI rescuers transported the two hikers one at a time to safety on the shore of Hout Bay. The rescue concluded shortly after noon on Monday, with all rescuers safely off the trail.

The operation highlighted the importance of collaboration between emergency services and rescue organizations. "This rescue was a great example of what cooperation looks like," said David Nel, a spokesperson for Wilderness Search and Rescue. "It was an overnight operation in difficult terrain and conditions, and when the strong winds prevented the planned helicopter extraction, our teams adapted and found another way to safely get the hikers off the mountain."

The rescue team emphasized the treacherous state of the coastal trail, noting the presence of overgrown paths and the need for caution. They also cautioned hikers about the area's history of crime and advised against using that particular route.
