George Quaye urges Ghanaians to stop stigmatising Teshie over recent crime incidents

Actor and media personality George Quaye has urged Ghanaians not to stigmatise the residents of Teshie in response to recent criminal incidents. In a Facebook post, Mr Quaye highlighted the many challenges faced by the community, such as water shortages, difficulties for fishermen, declining fish stocks, and concerns over infrastructure.

He questioned why people only criticized Teshie when it made the headlines for negative reasons, rather than when residents had previously expressed concerns about water, fishing, and other issues. Mr Quaye stressed that crime exists in densely populated areas of Ghana, but should not define the entire community. He drew from his own experience growing up in Kotobabi, noting that a phone theft near his home did not mean everyone in his neighborhood was responsible.

He cited other communities like Kasoa, Ashaiman, and East Legon as examples where crime also occurred. Mr Quaye called for more security, intelligence-led operations, and proactive policing to address the issue. He praised Teshie's contributions to Ghana's culture, particularly its coffin-carving industry and creative talents. Despite the crime, Mr Quaye encouraged the public to recognize the creativity, resilience, and good deeds of Teshie's residents.

He urged Ghanaians to show empathy towards the community beyond periods of negative publicity, addressing their needs in areas such as water access, support for fishermen, and improved infrastructure and security.
