Fugro deploys autonomous underwater vehicle for Petronas ultra-deepwater survey

KUALA LUMPUR: Fugro has successfully completed a geohazard site survey for Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, aimed at the Megah and Limbayong fields located off the coast of Sabah. This important survey provided essential geophysical data concerning seabed and subsurface conditions, which is crucial for identifying potential hazards and planning engineering design and field development in the ultra-deepwater environment.

Fugro revolutionized this project by deploying its Echo Surveyor 8 AUV from the Fugro Equator to gather high-resolution bathymetric, geophysical, and shallow subsurface data while remaining in close proximity to the seabed. This innovative approach, supported by Fugro's Kuala Lumpur Remote Operations Centre, ensured continuous data quality control and processing throughout the campaign, which commenced in June and was finalized in August 2026.

Safri Drahman, Asia Pacific regional business line director for marine site characterisation at Fugro, highlighted that the integration of advanced technology with real-time remote operations facilitated faster data delivery and more efficient survey execution. He emphasized that the project showcased Fugro's commitment to investing in cutting-edge technology and its ability to deliver offshore solutions across the Asia Pacific region.
