Five things the Proteas learnt from sweeping Australia ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup

The South African cricket team, known as the Proteas, have secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-match One Day International (ODI) series against Australia. Despite the 2027 Cricket World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, being a year away, the Proteas' strong performances against Australia are seen as a promising sign for their World Cup aspirations.

Sporting victories against Australia hold significant importance, especially when played on home soil before the World Cup. As a result, the Proteas are currently enjoying a sixth consecutive ODI series win over the Aussies, a streak that spans a decade. Their victory in the last ODI, a 32-run win, was completed with a final chapter on Wednesday, 30 September, in Potchefstroom.

The next match on that day will allow the South Africans to complete a whitewash by winning the series 3-0. However, even before the World Cup, such a dominant victory over the six-time ODI world champions will send a strong message about the Proteas' intent for the tournament. While the 50-over World Cup is still a year away, strong performances against Australia provide opportunities for players to showcase their skills and potentially earn a spot in the final team.

One such player is Proteas veteran David Miller, who delivered his best-ever ODI performance with the bat, scoring 142 runs off 93 balls to help South Africa secure the series victory at Wanderers Stadium. Miller's performance was particularly special as he played in honor of his mother, who is a breast cancer survivor. The bowling unit, consisting of several key players, contributed to the win by helping South Africa defend the total and bowl out Australia for 333.

Despite a heated verbal exchange between skipper Bavuma and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock during the Pink ODI in Johannesburg, coach Shukri Conrad dismissed any claims of insubordination or disrespect. He emphasized that the players are best friends and that such incidents should not become a storyline. With their heads held high, the Proteas are confident of finishing off the Aussies in the ODI battle before shifting their focus to the upcoming three-match Test series starting on 9 October.
