Firework sparks hit gas-filled balloons, causing explosion at Lamphun event

LAMPHUN, 27 September 2026 - A fireworks display during a commemorative event at Tha Nang Gate in Lamphun resulted in an explosion that left several people injured. The incident transpired around 20:00 on the third night of the festivities, as reported by the Ha Lamphun Facebook page. Eyewitnesses testified that sparks from fireworks inadvertently struck a gas-filled balloon, leading to the explosion and causing injuries among attendees.

Panic ensued among the crowd, while officials swiftly tended to the wounded and transported them to hospitals. Organizers of the Vijit Lamphun event accepted responsibility for the mishap and pledged to implement stringent safety measures for upcoming fireworks displays planned for October 2-4. Authorities have cautioned the public against bringing flammable materials or gas-filled balloons near fireworks zones, emphasizing the potential hazards even minor sparks can pose.

Additional fireworks displays are part of VIJIT Thailand @ LAMPHUN, organized by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand. These will occur daily at 20:00 on October 2, 3, and 4, 2026.
