FG approves upgrade of Onne, Delta, Calabar ports

The Federal Government has given the green light to upgrade the Onne, Delta, and Calabar ports, alongside the previous approval for the modernisation and improvement of ports in Lagos. This decision, announced by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, is part of a larger strategy aimed at repositioning Nigeria's maritime sector as a major driver of economic growth, trade, investment, and employment under President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

Oyetola emphasized that modern, efficient, and competitive ports are vital for achieving these goals, as they facilitate trade, support industry, attract investments, and create jobs. He highlighted that expanding the modernisation programme to ports beyond Lagos will help distribute cargo traffic more evenly, boost cargo handling, and improve regional connectivity.

Oyetola also stressed the importance of modernising existing ports and developing new deep seaports to significantly increase Nigeria's maritime capacity and establish a stronger economic corridor across the country.
