FAI investigates alleged racist abuse of Idah

The Football Association of Ireland is probing allegations that forward Adam Idah faced racist abuse from supporters of Israel during a 3-0 UEFA Nations League match victory for the Republic of Ireland on Sunday. According to BBC Sport, midfielder Jayson Molumby approached match officials and requested they listen for any abusive chants from the small number of Israel fans present at the match in Debrecen, Hungary.

However, officials reported at full-time they did not hear any racist chanting. The FAI learned that because no clear racism allegation was reported during the game, normal procedures were not followed and a UEFA investigation could not proceed. The FAI is now conducting its own investigation by collecting high-quality footage of the match, including audio from pitchside microphones, to determine if any abuse was directed at Idah.

If the FAI panel finds evidence of abuse, they will file a complaint with UEFA to request a further investigation by the European football governing body. Idah was unaware of any possible abuse during the match and is receiving support from teammates and staff members before the Republic of Ireland's remaining three fixtures in the international break.

It remains unclear whether the FAI will present its case to UEFA before or after the upcoming behind-closed-doors game against Israel in Backa Topola, Serbia.
