Etihad doubles Sydney flights as UAE airline expands global network

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways will double daily flights between Abu Dhabi and Sydney starting December 15, according to the airline. This expansion will add over 5,000 seats weekly in each direction during the Australian summer holiday period. The increased frequency will be operated on Etihad's Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, offering passengers two departure options daily.

Etihad has been serving Sydney since 2007, with its Australian network also including a daily service to Melbourne using a Boeing 787. The additional Sydney flights will provide greater flexibility for travellers connecting to Australia from the UAE and other destinations within Etihad's network.

Arik De, Etihad's chief revenue and commercial officer, stated that the increased service will strengthen connections through Abu Dhabi, making it easier for travellers to access destinations across the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent.

Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves noted that the airline returned to full capacity by July and is experiencing strong demand. July saw a 17% increase in capacity compared to the same period last year, with the company generating more revenue. August was slightly weaker due to higher fuel prices, but overall, July and August were described as "very good" months for the airline. Neves expects Etihad to end the year with around 140 aircraft, up from approximately 70 in 2022, as the company continues to expand its global network.
