Egypt launches public operations for 2nd phase of BRT project

The Egyptian Transport Ministry announced the commencement of public operations for the second phase of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project on September 26. This expansion extends the BRT network from the Ring Road and Alexandria Agricultural Road intersection to the Sun Capital station, integrating it into the modern mass transit system for Greater Cairo.

Phase II includes 16 stations and a transit route of approximately 40 kilometers, complementing the 35 kilometers covered in the first phase. The total length of the BRT system, once both phases are operational, will span about 75 kilometers. The BRT system offers competitive ticket pricing: five Egyptian pounds for journeys between one and four stations, and LE35 for trips covering 27-30 stations.

Professor of road and port engineering, Abdullah Abu-Khadra, highlighted that the project enhances Greater Cairo's mass transit by alleviating traffic congestion, reducing irregular traffic movements on the Ring Road, and providing air-conditioned, fixed-schedule service. The Sun Capital station, located at the intersection of the Ring Road and Fayoum Road, is a key component of the integrated transport system, offering comprehensive transport services for commuters traveling along Fayoum Desert Road and surrounding areas.

BRT stations are accessible via pedestrian bridges, tunnels, and elevators, contributing to traffic regulation by prohibiting direct pedestrian crossings and eliminating informal microbus stops along the route.
