Dr Mahathir sheds tears as Siti Hasmah laid to rest [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad bid farewell to his late wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, in a deeply emotional moment that lasted seven decades. The former prime minister, who utilized a motorized wheelchair and an oxygen tube, accompanied his wife through the funeral rites, standing by her side throughout. The proceedings took place from their family residence to the mosque, Masjid As-Shyarif, Taman Sungai Besi Indah, and ultimately the National Cemetery, Precinct 20, Putrajaya.

Amid a somber ambiance, the former leader appeared to be in deep distress, gazing blankly at his wife's remains at the mosque before joining the funeral prayers, which drew thousands of attendees. At the national burial site, Dr Mahathir watched helplessly as his wife's remains were interred in the grave, accompanied by family members.

He was seen shedding tears beside the grave during the final moments, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and affection that endeared them to the public. The couple's enduring relationship lasted for 70 years, marked by public displays of their affection and warmth during official and private events. Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah were married on August 5, 1956, and last August marked their 70th wedding anniversary. Dr Siti Hasmah passed away at the National Heart Institute (IJN) this morning at the age of 100.
