Dr. Alió Brings IOL and Presbyopia Surgical Solutions to Berlin and Mallorca

Professor Jorge Alió, a renowned ophthalmologist from Elche, has been actively participating in two major ophthalmological congresses this week: the German Ophthalmological Society Congress in Berlin and the 102nd Congress of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology in Palma de Mallorca. During these events, he has focused on discussing the latest surgical advancements in anterior segment surgery, particularly addressing the challenges posed by presbyopia (age-related loss of near vision) and intraocular lens (IOL) treatment.

At the German Ophthalmological Society Congress, Dr. Alió presented a lecture titled "Accommodative IOLs – an Alternative for the Presbyopes?". This session explored the potential of accommodative intraocular lenses as an alternative solution for presbyopia patients, emphasizing their role in providing functional vision at various distances. Dr. Alió highlighted the innovative design of lenses like Lumina, which aim to mimic the eye's natural mechanism of accommodation.

Later, at the Spanish Society of Ophthalmology Congress in Mallorca, Dr. Alió delivered a CME course titled "Techniques for explantation and exchange of posterior chamber pseudophakic lenses". This course targeted the complex area of removing or replacing intraocular lenses, focusing on evaluating both the implanted lens's characteristics and the patient's anatomical and ocular condition to determine the optimal surgical strategy.

Throughout both congresses, Dr. Alió also delivered presentations on iris fixation techniques, particularly for cases where the eye's capsular structures do not offer sufficient support for conventional lens implantation. He explained that iris fixation can be a viable option in complex cases of aphakia or absent capsular support, underscoring the importance of proper indication and technical execution to ensure favorable outcomes and minimize complications.

Dr. Alió's involvement in these scientific events underscores his dedication to advancing eye surgery techniques and his significant influence in the field. His recent appointment as the new president of the European Academy of Ophthalmology (EAO) further solidifies his position as a leading authority in cataract and refractive surgery.
