Delhi’s new liquor policy rollout likely, prices may surge before festive season

Delhi's government is preparing to introduce a new liquor policy in October, potentially leading to an increase in liquor prices before the festive season. The policy would raise excise duty and retail margins, benefiting the government by boosting revenue. Currently, there are no private liquor shops in Delhi; instead, all 700 shops are government-run, limiting customers' choices and revenue for retailers.

The proposed changes aim to address this by allowing premium liquor stores to operate, catering to customers seeking higher-priced brands. Additionally, the government plans to adjust excise duty rates and serving times for liquor in hotels, clubs, and restaurants. This shift could potentially lead to higher prices, as suggested by Vinod Giri, Director General of Brewers Association of India.
