Delhi records second-coldest September night in 25 years, coldest in 2 years

Delhi experienced its second-coolest September night in 25 years on Sunday, with the Safdarjung Observatory recording a minimum temperature of 21 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The temperature was three notches below the seasonal average, marking the coldest September night in two years, since 2008 when the lowest temperature was 20.8 degrees Celsius.

In 2024, the city had already seen a colder night, with a minimum of 21.1 degrees Celsius. The IMD added that the dip in temperature was even more pronounced in other parts of the capital, with Palam Observatory recording 19.2 degrees Celsius, 4.7 degrees below normal, and Mayur Vihar at 19.5 degrees. The coolest spot in the city was the Delhi Ridge station, where the minimum temperature plummeted to 16.8 degrees Celsius, a seven-notch departure categorized as "markedly below normal" by the IMD.

The low temperature was attributed to a low-pressure area over central Uttar Pradesh drawing moisture into the region, a Western Disturbance active over North India, increased cloud cover, rainfall, and strong North-Northeasterly winds.
