DCI rejects report linking officer to alleged election materials interception

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kenya has rejected a report alleging that its officers were involved in the interception of a vehicle at the Uganda border and the seizure of election-related materials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). According to the DCI, the claims are "false and misleading", and no officers were involved in the incident.

The Directorate also denied that any officer was investigating alleged electoral malpractice, threatened with transfer or moved to DCI headquarters. They expressed concern over the timing of the report, which comes as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election, stating that such unverified claims could undermine public confidence in institutions.

The DCI emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in electoral matters, stressing that verification and an opportunity for the institution concerned to respond are critical. The agency reiterated its commitment to a free, fair, transparent, and credible electoral process, and urged media organizations to exercise caution when reporting on sensitive electoral and security matters.
