David Robinson’s $9M school gives underserved children access to education

David Robinson, a former NBA player, has dedicated his post-playing career to improving education for underserved children in San Antonio. In the 1990s, Robinson made a promise to fifth-graders at Gates Elementary School that if they graduated high school and went on to college, he would provide them with a $2,000 college scholarship.

Over a decade later, Robinson's promise had evolved into the establishment of Carver Academy, an independent school backed by a $9 million donation from his foundation. The school opened in 2001 on San Antonio's East Side, providing education to children from low-income families.

Robinson's commitment to education was rooted in his own family's experiences. His parents placed a strong emphasis on learning despite having limited educational opportunities themselves. Robinson later witnessed how this decision transformed his family within two generations. This realization motivated him to create Carver Academy, where he could give back to a community that had given him so much.

Initially, Carver Academy served 94 fifth-graders, each with a promise of $2,000 if they completed high school and attended college. After witnessing the success of the initial promise in 1998, Robinson increased the scholarship amount to $8,000 for every student who earned their diploma. This experience helped form the basis of Robinson's broader philanthropic efforts, which emphasized early education and support.

Robinson's foundation, established alongside his wife Valerie, has since supported children and families while placing education among its major areas of focus. The David Robinson Fellowship, which began in 2012 after Carver Academy joined IDEA Public Schools, has provided financial assistance, mentoring, and leadership development for IDEA Carver students.

The fellowship aims to help students identify their unique passions and goals, encouraging them to pursue their individual calling rather than simply following Robinson's career path in professional sports.

Robinson's education mission has grown significantly since its inception, evolving from a promise made to a group of fifth-graders to a long-term effort that includes schools, scholarships, mentoring, and leadership programs. His basketball career provided the resources and platform for Robinson to create such an impactful education initiative, but his decision to focus on education was based on his family's experiences and the opportunities it created for their children.
