Court orders NMDPRA to continue issuing fuel import licences to Matrix, AA Rano, AYM Shafa

On September 16, the Allahabad High Court's single bench ordered a probe into a Dalit student's allegations of caste discrimination at National Law University (NLU) Prayagraj. The allegations included the HoD of Law and the warden of the boys' hostel humiliating the student based on caste and the university shielding the HoD by not acting on the complaint.

The student sought an independent review of his Constitutional Law-II and other answer sheets to determine if they were assessed using the same standards as other students.

In response, the HoD and the university filed a special appeal challenging the order on September 23. In their appeal, they argued that the Equal Opportunity Cell should have been allowed to examine the complaint instead of the judicial officers appointed by the single bench. Furthermore, they contended that the power of the university to investigate such allegations through an appropriate committee should not be taken away, as it is within the university's domain to handle the welfare of students and address situations as they arise.

The division bench consisting of Justices Siddhartha Varma and Kunal Ravi Singh took the view that since the Equal Opportunity Cell was available at the university, there was no need for the judicial inquiry. They maintained that the university should have the authority to investigate such matters and uphold the welfare of its students.

Consequently, the proceedings have been stayed until the next date of listing for the special appeal, which is set for September 29. If the inquiry report is prepared, it will be submitted in a sealed cover before the court on the following date.
