Cornell University gang-rape allegations to be reinvestigated

A prosecutor's investigation into allegations of a gang rape at Cornell University's Chi Phi fraternity has been reopened. The woman, known only as Jane Doe, claims she was drugged and assaulted by seven students in October 2024. She filed a lawsuit against the fraternity, the university, a local bar, and the seven individuals involved.

Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten announced that his office would present evidence to a New York grand jury. Cornell University had previously conducted its own investigation, leading to expulsions and suspensions of some students, and closing the fraternity chapter. The university and the district attorney's office have faced criticism for not imposing more severe consequences on the accused.

The accuser's attorney did not respond to requests for comment on the prosecutor's decision to reopen the case.
