Comedian convicted for Erdogan ‘insult’ but freed pending appeal

An Istanbul court convicted comedian Deniz Goktas for insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and another charge, but granted his interim release pending appeal. The 32-year-old, known for his political satire, spent nearly three months in Karatepe high-security prison after his arrest on July 3 for a viral YouTube performance.

Goktas faced charges of insulting Erdogan, inciting public hatred, and praising crime and criminals. He argued that calling Erdogan a "shy dictator" was a political characterization, not an insult. Prosecutors cited his statement of the dictator's unlikelihood as a basis for conviction. Goktas had never been prosecuted before despite past comedians facing similar criticisms.

He urged the court to acquit him and release him, expressing pride in his work and encouraging others to continue their artistic pursuits. His arrest marked a continuation of a crackdown on critics of Turkey's Islamo-conservative government and its values, targeting politicians, artists, musicians, journalists, and LGBTQ activists.
