Canadian ‘crypto king’ set to represent himself at fraud trial

Aiden Pleterski, a social media personality, faces a criminal trial in Ontario’s Superior Court of Justice for allegedly defrauding investors out of approximately $30 million through a crypto Ponzi scheme between 2021 and 2022. The trial, scheduled to commence next week, is a result of charges filed in May 2024, alleging money laundering and fraud.

According to a report by CBC News, Pleterski has been unable to secure a delay in his trial to obtain legal representation and is expected to represent himself in court. The fraud charge alone carries a maximum sentence of up to 14 years in prison if he is found guilty. Pleterski's case is part of a series of high-profile crypto industry figures facing criminal charges in 2022, during a market downturn and as several companies filed for bankruptcy.

In December 2022, several individuals, including Pleterski, were reportedly kidnapped and tortured for three days by alleged victims of his scheme, who demanded payment and threatened his life and family. The trial is expected to last about four weeks, with the fraud charge alone carrying a potential maximum sentence of up to 14 years in prison if he is convicted.
