Can MediAsas keep medical bills from breaking the bank?

Malaysia's MediAsas plan aims to provide basic medical insurance and takaful coverage to more Malaysians. Currently, only about 22% of the population has medical and health insurance. Without insurance, healthcare costs can quickly become unmanageable for individuals and families. MediAsas is intended to offer a foundational layer of protection, with options for additional top-ups or other products.

The policy covers a basic medical expense limit, which rises with age, but falls short of the larger limits commonly found in the market. Despite this, MediAsas aims to improve access to coverage for those with pre-existing conditions, offering guaranteed renewal up to age 85 and no lifetime benefit limit. However, some concerns have been raised about the plan's "no look-back" rule, which could lead to claims being contested after seven continuous years if undisclosed medical conditions are discovered.
