Cabbies, PHV drivers can take up bus driver jobs by signing up for new training programme from Oct 1

The Singapore government has launched a new training program to help cabbies and private-hire drivers transition into bus driving roles. The program, which can be completed part-time or full-time over a two to six month period, includes on-the-job training and skill-building in areas such as electric vehicle diagnostics and bus interchange operations.

Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling emphasized the importance of preparing workers for the industry's technological changes, stating that the program aims to support workers as the sector transforms. Many drivers have expressed concerns about autonomous vehicles potentially impacting their jobs, making this career conversion scheme one of several options available, including one for those interested in becoming AV specialists.

The initiative is part of a broader driver support package that seeks to help drivers anticipate technological advancements and seize new job opportunities. Drivers with a Class 4 license for heavy vehicle operation will be able to complete the training in a shorter timeframe. Interested individuals can apply to any of the four public bus operators - Go-Ahead Singapore, SBS Transit, SMRT Buses, and Tower Transit Singapore.

The scheme complements the government's efforts to attract and retain local bus drivers, with new drivers receiving increased starting salaries and sign-on bonuses from January 2027.
