Bangkok floods flush out cockroaches — and they are not staying put (VIDEO)

Bangkok, Sept 28 — As torrential rains drenched the Thai capital, turning roads into rivers and homes into watery graves, an unexpected visitor emerged from the muck and mire: the cockroach. Videos and photographs circulating on social media showcased these uninvited guests scurrying across flooded streets and inside submerged houses, causing a wave of discomfort among residents.

Among those capturing the moment were actor and content creator Martin Bravo and his companions, who shared their ordeal with the chaotic floodwaters while keeping a vigilant eye out for the creeping and crawling creatures. The relentless downpour lasted almost two days, with some areas receiving over 300mm of rain, prompting the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to declare all 50 districts as flood disaster zones.

In some parts, rainfall accumulated to over 330mm, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. While the sudden influx of cockroaches was an unwelcome surprise, it was a logical consequence of the floods. According to Thai pest-control guidelines, heavy rain often forces cockroaches and other creatures out of drains and sewer systems, pushing them into homes and other dry shelters in search of safety.

Social media was flooded with footage of these insects joining the flood, adding an extra layer of distress to the already harrowing situation. The disaster had a direct impact on around 52,000 households, displacing nearly 4,900 people to temporary shelters. The cockroaches, seeking refuge from the rising waters, left Bangkok residents with a particularly unpleasant task: deciding which creatures deserved priority as they navigated the treacherous floodwaters.
