Azalina: Media freedom a key point in Freedom of Information Bill

KUALA LUMPUR: Media freedom is a crucial aspect of the upcoming Freedom of Information (FOI) Bill 2026, according to Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. The minister emphasized that it is essential to provide media practitioners with ample space to report on matters of public interest. Azalina stated that any new laws must not be restrictive or hinder journalists' duties, as they are fundamental to information transparency in a democratic nation.

She reiterated that media freedom and journalists' ability to carry out their work are integral components of a country's democracy, as outlined in Article 10 of the Federal Constitution. Azalina highlighted that freedom of speech loses its significance if the public and media lack access to accurate information. She cautioned against framing the FOI Bill as a mere law to control information, as it would be counterproductive.

Instead, she advocated for a comprehensive approach that includes clear provisions on rights, exemptions, authorities' responsibilities, review mechanisms, and redress processes. Azalina emphasized that the public hearing on the FOI Bill serves as a platform for civil society, NGOs, students, and the public to express their views before a final decision is made.

She reiterated her commitment to prioritizing the people's interests in matters involving information, stating, "We want to put the people first when it comes to matters involving information."
