Automobilzulieferer: Bosch halbiert seine Belegschaft in Nürnberg

Automobilzulieferer Bosch plans to reduce its workforce in its Nuremberg plant by roughly half over the next three years, with 900 job cuts specifically targeted for the city. The company announced this reduction alongside an already announced global workforce reduction of 22,000 employees. Most of these cuts will affect the mobility sector.

As of the end of the first half of 2026, Bosch had already laid off around 6,500 employees compared to the end of 2025, but still managed to increase its revenue compared to the previous year by 3.6 percent. Last year, Bosch recorded its first profit since the financial crisis, despite posting a loss on the aggregate. The company justified the Nuremberg move citing the ongoing transformation in the automotive industry and increasing competition and pricing pressures.

Chinese competitors are particularly responsible for this shift. The global automotive market is stagnating, with European demand even declining. Bosch primarily manufactures components for the internal combustion engine and fuel cells in Nuremberg. With the shift towards electric mobility, internal combustion engines are losing importance.

The fuel cell for hydrogen propulsion has not yet met expectations, leading to an overabundance of personnel in Nuremberg that is not economically viable in the long run. Bosch announced it would take socially acceptable measures for the workforce reduction. "This decision is extremely difficult for us as it has profound implications for our dedicated team in Nuremberg.

However, we must adapt our structures to the changing market environment and restore our competitiveness," the company said in a statement.
