ASEAN must guard against perception of geopolitical agenda

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan emphasized the need for ASEAN to maintain a principled collective voice, warning against the perception of the bloc advancing specific geopolitical interests. He noted ASEAN's growing influence, driven by its substantial population and economic strength, which has positioned the regional bloc to garner support from the international community.

However, Mohamad stressed the importance of cautious handling of ASEAN's international matters, as the bloc must remain anchored in principles such as defending human rights and adhering to international law. Speaking at a press conference following Malaysia's national statement at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, he highlighted the need for ASEAN to be trusted and heard by the global community, especially as the region grapples with an increasingly uncertain geopolitical and geo-economic landscape.

Malaysia has been invited to co-chair the Hague Group, a coalition focused on upholding international law and addressing the Palestinian issue. This invitation reflects Malaysia's strong advocacy for international law and human rights on global platforms. While the appointment of Malaysia as co-chair awaits Cabinet approval and consideration by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, it underscores Malaysia's growing role in advocating for international law and human rights at international forums.
