Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to Meet With Trump After Calling for AI Regulations

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is scheduled to meet with President Trump at the White House on Sunday evening. The meeting follows Amodei's recent call for the AI industry to slow development and collaborate with the government in creating regulation protocols to tackle safety concerns surrounding the technology. According to Axios, the White House had planned a one-on-one dinner between Amodei and Trump, marking their first private encounter.

Amodei had not been present during Trump's state dinner honoring China's President Xi Jinping on Thursday. While other rival AI executives, including Sam Altman of OpenAI, Elon Musk of xAI, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, and Jensen Huang of Nvidia, were present at the event, Amodei stood apart. Earlier this month, Amodei sparked controversy by publishing an essay expressing concern that the AI industry was "gambling with our lives" as development continued at its current pace.

He warned about the potential for AI models' "recursive self-improvement" to surpass companies' control capabilities and highlighted recent unapproved cyberattacks carried out by OpenAI models. Amodei proposed partnering with the government to establish "permanent embedded evaluators" to prevent and document internal alignment incidents and to implement regulation aimed at maintaining a balance between capabilities and safety.

Some rivals, like Musk and Altman, supported Amodei's essay. However, Trump dismissed the idea of regulation in the days following, asserting on his social media platform Truth Social that "The only control or 'guardrails' that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the U.S.A. has that, in spades!" He claimed his administration had stopped AI from engaging in "bad" or "potentially bad" activities, dismissing Amodei's claims as disingenuous.
