Amsterdam top destination for young people leaving home

New data from the Dutch National Statistics Office reveals that Amsterdam remains the top destination for young people in the Netherlands who are leaving the family home. In 2024 alone, over 174,000 individuals aged 18 to 30 moved out of their parents' residence, with a significant portion making Amsterdam their new home. Among these young migrants, 33% chose Amsterdam, marking it as the most popular choice ahead of Rotterdam and Groningen.

The city also attracted a notable number of students, with 5,475 young people settling in Amsterdam, outpacing other cities like Utrecht and Groningen. Notably, Nijmegen stood out among students, with 53.1% of young newcomers choosing it, followed closely by Utrecht and Leiden at 49.5% each. Interestingly, The Hague deviated from the norm, with 65.4% of young residents not being students.

The majority of young people moving out of their parents' home in 2024 were students, accounting for just under a third of the total. Among them, 49.9% opted for privately rented housing, with the rest settling into social housing or owner-occupied properties. Among non-students, there was a higher inclination towards purchasing a home (42.6%).

These statistics pertain to young people registered as living with their parents in the Netherlands at the beginning of 2024, excluding those who immigrated from abroad that year.
