Africa: G20+ Mobilises U.S.$2.9 Billion for Ebola Response As Africa CDC Calls for Full Transparency and Traceability of Every Dollar

The African Centre for Disease Control (Africa CDC) welcomed the historic $2.9 billion mobilization for Ebola response, as announced at the G20+ Foreign Ministers Meeting on 23 September 2026 in New York. This unprecedented funding, led by the United States, must now be swiftly converted into disbursements, implementation and measurable results for affected communities.

Africa CDC praised the leadership of the United States and other international partners, including the European Union, World Bank, Pandemic Fund, African countries, and bilateral donors. The meeting brought together G20 members, partner countries, and international organizations, with Africa CDC participating in its continental coordination role and co-leading the Incident Management Support Team alongside WHO.

U.S. Under Secretary of State Allison Hooker emphasized the need for collective action and sustained international burden-sharing to defeat Ebola, while Prime Minister H.E. Judith Suminwa Tuluka of the DRC stressed the outbreak's importance as a testing ground for the country. H.E. Adonia Ayebare, Uganda's Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the four factors that made the difference in Uganda's success: strong political leadership, a health system prepared to respond, community trust and engagement, and excellent cross-border cooperation.

Africa CDC stressed that the meeting's success must be measured by the rapid disbursement, deployment, and impact of resources. They will strengthen the Africa CDC Financial Tracking Mechanism, working closely with the DRC, WHO, and partners to ensure greater visibility over commitments, disbursements, expenditures, implementation locations, and results. This transparency aims to build trust, accelerate delivery, save lives, and strengthen national leadership in the fight against Ebola.
