Abiriw Guantuahene ‘Super 8’ Tennis: Thomas Ohene Effah ‘Octopus’ crowned winner of maiden edition

The inaugural Abiriw Guantuahene Super 8 Tennis Tournament concluded on an exciting note with Thomas Ohene Effah, nicknamed the Octopus, emerging victorious after just six days of intense matches on the clay court. The final showdown pitted the Octopus against Andrews Adu Appiah, known as Akaak, who managed to secure a narrow 6-2, 7-5 win in under an hour.

The tournament, which featured eight of the finest semi-professional tennis players, showcased thrilling moments between September 20-25 at the Ghana Lawn Tennis Club in Accra. The climax of the event was attended by notable figures, including the tournament's founder Nana Kwabena Owusu, the Spanish ambassador to Ghana, Mrs. Isabel Ibarra Serrano de Haro, and former Ghana number one, Benkumhene of Abiriw, Nana Asiedu Oppong Antwi I. A curtain-raising exhibition game featured top female athletes, Boss Chic and Emily.

The Octopus secured the first set quickly, breaking his opponent twice, and later extended his lead in the second set, ultimately winning all four games in the final round. Following the match, the runner-up acknowledged the competition's intensity and promised to improve in the next edition. The elated Octopus expressed gratitude to Nana Guantuahene for the ambitious initiative and hinted that he would not rest despite winning the maiden title.

Nana Kwabena Owusu, the event's founder, congratulated the athletes and pledged to elevate tennis in Ghana, possibly introducing a female category in the next tournament.
