Abia ranks second in revised Phillips Consulting 2026 report

Abia State has been ranked second in Nigeria in the revised 2026 State Performance Index Report by Phillips Consulting, according to a statement from the state's Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu. The report, initially released in July 2026, utilizes a Momentum Index to rank states based on their performance improvements over time.

Previously, Abia was ranked 36th in 2024 and 10th in 2025, representing a 34-place improvement, the largest among the 33 states ranked in the 2026 edition. The report highlights Abia's strong performance in citizen satisfaction, with a standardised score of +1.78 and an absolute score of 3.92, which is classified as 'Good'. Residents rated government support for business highest, followed by roads and publicity of government policies.

In fiscal indicators, Abia scored 27% in revenue self-reliance and had an Internally Generated Revenue per capita of approximately N13,100. The state's debt per capita was about N31,300, with a 36% debt-to-revenue ratio and a 70% capital expenditure share. The report also emphasizes Abia's transparency score of 0.38, based on its FY2025 audited accounts, which were used instead of FY2024 figures.

The South-East region, of which Abia is a part, showed significant improvements nationally, with Abia ranking second nationally and Enugu ranking third.
